Hello everyone!

So, I am having a bit of a snaffu with my reviews thus far. I was trying a new thing where I would post the covers of the reviews that would be coming up for the following week, but that's not working so great. Why, you might ask? Some of the books I just can't get through the first 50 pages! So, I'm setting a few down and will need to come back to them!

So this week I will have reviews up, however they may not all be from my previous listing..sorry to all those who had your hearts set on the books I had previously shown! I do hope you'll love the reviews I put up anyway!

I will post my first review tomorrow, so I hope to see you then!

FORGOTTEN
SOURCE: Review Copy from Little Brown
AUTHOR: Cat Patrick
PUBLISHED: June 1st/7th 2011
PUBLISHER: Little Brown Books for Young Readers
LENGTH: 304 pgs.

Each night when 16 year-old London Lane goes to sleep, her whole world disappears. In the morning, all that's left is a note telling her about a day she can't remember. The whole scenario doesn't exactly make high school or dating that hot guy whose name she can't seem to recall any easier. But when London starts experiencing disturbing visions she can't make sense of, she realizes it's time to learn a little more about the past she keeps forgetting-before it destroys her future.

Part psychological drama, part romance, and part mystery, this thought-provoking novel will inspire readers to consider the what-if's in their own lives and recognize the power they have to control their destinies.

FIRST IMPRESSION:
I have loved every cover they have used for the various releases of Forgotten and that coupled with the synopsis and the fact that it was a debut author, it was like a magnet drawing me in!

LIKES:
The writing was effortlessly beautiful and the characters drew you in like old friends. It was a very "comfortable" book, it just felt right when it was in my hands, like it belonged there.

DISLIKES:
The ending...if this is not(and i don't believe it is), part of a series, trilogy, duo...what not I am just going to burst! If this stays a stand alone, you will be very disappointed. Then ending is good, but so many things are left untied that you feel like...what is going on...it feels like there is no real ending:(

OVERALL REVIEW:
Overall I absolutely loved Forgotten. It is a wonderful debut novel and I think it has a fresh topic for YA. I have read some comparisons to the movie 50 first dates and yes it has some  similar qualities, but it is in no way a book version of the movie.

London has so many unanswered questions in her life that for the most part she feels will never get answered. It bad enough when you can't get an answer to a question, let alone not even being able to remember the question itself. At first I thought London's condition was kind of cool. I mean who wouldn't want to forget a horrible day, a fight with a loved one, how much you hate your job, or a death? To be able to just "flush" any bad memories seemed like a good deal to me.

For London however, when you flush the bad memories you also flush the good ones.....her condition all of a sudden didn't seem so appealing to me anymore. For every bad day that gets erased a thankful hug goes with it and for every death that you're able to shield yourself from you loose the joyful memory of the birth of a beautiful new beginning.

London writes down her days memories everyday so she can read them in the days to come, but if she forgets...well they are as good as gone. The relationship between London and her mother is unique, but suffers the same struggles as any mother/daughter relationship would. They help each other work through the day to day tasks while they both try to understand where this world is taking them.

London and a "boy"(don't want to give away anything) have a beautiful relationship that blossoms and unfolds in more ways than one! My heart ached every time a new day came and she couldn't remember glances or smiles or the simple touch of his hand. I would be heart broken if I couldn't remember how my husband  and I met or our first kiss, no matter how much you write in your diary, you can't write down a feeling.

Remembering forward reminded me of back to the future. You see yourself or situations as they will be 5,10,15 years from now...and while that seems as though it could be a big help it sometimes creates more problems than it should. Unlike London who has no control over what she remembers or forgets, some people in her life don't want to know their future. Some people want to trip over a chair and break their leg rather than having the opportunity to push the chair in and the broken leg never happening.

Forgotten has so many unpredictable twist and turns, it really makes you think that all things in life happen for a reason and changing one tiny thing creates a reaction for everything else. Sometimes you should leave fate to fate.... other times you should jump aboard and change it.

I would recommend Forgotten to anyone and everyone within earshot! You will not be disappointed...with the book itself, just the ending as your heart is breaking, much like mine did! Nothing is as it seems in Forgotten so prepare yourself for what I consider one of the best debut author books of the year!

THE DUFF
SOURCE: Review Copy
AUTHOR: Kody Keplinger
PUBLISHED: September 7th 2010
PUBLISHER: Little Brown/Poppy
LENGTH: 288 pgs
Goodreads*Amazon*Author Website

Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn’t think she’s the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She’s also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her “the Duff,” she throws her Coke in his face. But things aren’t so great at home right now, and Bianca is desperate for a distraction. She ends up kissing Wesley. Worse, she likes it. Eager for escape, Bianca throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with him. Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out Wesley isn’t such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she’s falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

FIRST IMPRESSION:
For what seemed like forever I had wanted to read The DUFF and finally the sky's opened up and Little Brown/Poppy books bestowed a copy on me to review! Yay....I was way to excited the cover was unusually awesome, but what caught me more was the term DUFF. I was ready to go full speed ahead!

LIKES:
I loved the feel of real life high school. From the clothes to the class descriptions, I felt like I was right back in the hallways of my old high school waiting for 2:30pm so the bell would ring and I could blow that popsicle stand!

DISLIKES:
Although true to teenage culture, I was a bit turned off by all the uses of curse words. It seemed like those were the only words that Bianca knew. It got to the point where I almost put The DUFF down and moved on, but I pushed through and I'm glad I did.

OVERALL REVIEW:

I really liked The DUFF, sure there were a few snafoos here and there, but overall it was a semi-delicious book. Bianca was definitely a buzz kill and to be quite honest I didn't feel that sorry for her when she got called the duff because she was so dag gone annoying! I swear Bianca could not be pleased, I didn't think anything was ever going to make that girl happy.

The more the story unfolds, you start to get why Bianca looks at life like it's half empty instead of half full and a ting of sympathy develops for her. Biancas genuine love for her friends is very endearing and really helps to take The DUFF to the next level. Even when Wesley notifies Bianca that she is the duff, she never resents her friends for being beautiful, she just throws a coke in Wesleys face!

At one point or another all of us have felt like the duff, even if we were homecoming queen, cheerleader, or Ms. Popular. There is always someone that you feel inferior to and self conscious around, that point really hit home for me. It also opened my eyes to the fact that others may feel  like the duff when they are around me and I don't even know it. The DUFF makes you take a look around and really open your eyes to the girl in the corner, the friend who is always your wing girl, but never wants a wing girl for herself and the girl who walks with her head hung low.

During Biancas experience she learns that although it's usually the duff who gets used, the duff can also use people without knowing it. Ultimately, you have to be careful because you can turn into the very thing you hate. Wesley helps Bianca through out the novel in the most unusual, but not uncommon way and in return unknowingly to both of them Bianca helps Wesley in  more ways than either of them could have ever expected.

Drugs don't have to be illegal...drugs can be love, attention and the need for them that is so great you loose yourself.

I'd recommend The DUFF to anyone looking for a book with a little more substance, similar to Hunger and Rage by Jackie kessler The DUFF delivers a powerful story laced in a classic YA package.

*********************COATING****************

1. Why did you choose a "re-telling" of sorts of Cinderella and not, let’s say Snow White?

Cinderella is my favorite fairy tale because I feel like I can relate to her story more than the others.  But, the ironic thing about this question is that Snow White is another retelling that I have already begun.

2. How did YA influence you when you were younger?

The YA books that I read as a youth made me feel like somebody understood me.  I think the characters in YA books are what make them appealing to younger audiences.  They are often experiencing the same things and facing similar circumstances.  It’s like having friends that will truly open up to you and help you.

3. Who was/is your favorite YA author and why?

Lois Lowry.  The Giver is my favorite YA book and it was after reading that book as a teenager that I first wanted to become a writer.  I am grateful for its influence in my life back then and now.

4. How did you choose the personalities for Cinder &Ella?

I think with both of them I took personality traits that I wish I had, but on opposite ends of the spectrum.  I wish I was as nice as Cinder.  But sometimes I wish I had a little more fire to say the things I would like to say and do the things I would like to do without worrying (or even caring) about the consequences.

5. Who are you Cinder or Ella?

I am much more like Ella, although not quite as angry or spunky or neglected.  Cinder is the nicest person I’ve ever met, and while I try to be nice, I don’t come close to her.

Thanks so much for stopping by and giving us a little Q and A Melissa!

WELCOME ,Melissa Lemon author of Cinder and Ella and thank you for doing a  Mini Guest Blog Post!

The wonderful Fiction Fairy has asked me to write a blog post about why I chose to write YA books rather than adult books.Well, I’m here to tell you that I made no such choice. My first novel is actually an adult book.I am working on getting it ready for publication as we speak (I mean blog). If I were to write out a list of my current ideas, at least 2/3 of those ideas would be YA That is simply because young people are somewhere around twice as awesome as adults.  That is the honest truth.Oh, and by the way, when I say young people, I mean anybody under the age of 106 (as long as they are young at heart).Because I believe that a truly good book can be loved by the young and the old.

****************************************************

Wow, I never would have guessed that Melissa's first book was an adult book not a YA novel! I have to say though, I agree that us "young people" are twice as Super Awesome as "Adults"! Thanks for the mini guest post Melissa!
